Digital Songbook & Live Broadcast

What this calculator does

The Digital Songbook & Live Broadcast is a dual-display worship lyric system built for churches, bands, and any gathering that projects lyrics to an audience while a operator controls the flow. One browser tab becomes the Controller or Live Deck, where you build setlists, stage and project slides, and trigger blank-screen moments, while a second tab becomes the Broadcast Viewer that mirrors exactly what the operator sends — perfect for a projector or a confidence monitor. The two tabs synchronize live across the same browser, so advancing a slide on the controller instantly updates the projected view. You can import and edit songs, sanitize chords, deduplicate choruses, and switch between responsive, print, and songbook layouts. Songs are stored locally in your browser with optional GitHub Gist sync, and sermon integration pulls content through a standardized backend endpoint for a seamless service flow.

How to use it

The formula or method

The system runs on two synchronized browser tabs. The Controller tab holds the setlist and the operator controls; the Broadcast Viewer tab mirrors whatever the operator projects. Advancing a slide on the controller sends a message through the browser broadcast channel that the viewer receives and renders instantly, so the projected screen stays in lockstep with the operator. Songs are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB), with optional GitHub Gist sync for backup and sharing. Sermon integration pulls content through a standardized backend endpoint so a service flow can include spoken segments alongside songs.

A worked example

Open the tool in one tab as the Controller and build a four-song setlist. Open a second tab, switch it to Broadcast Viewer, and drag it to the projector display. As the service runs, you stage each song, advance to the first slide, and the projector updates instantly. Between songs, trigger blank-screen mode to clear the projection during a spoken segment. After the service, switch to print layout to produce a multi-column songbook of the setlist for the musicians, with chords sanitized and choruses deduplicated so the printed page reads cleanly.

Common mistakes and practical tips

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special hardware to project lyrics?

No. Any device with a browser can run the Controller, and any display with a browser can run the Broadcast Viewer. Point the second tab at your projector.

How do the two tabs stay in sync?

Through a browser broadcast channel. When you advance a slide on the controller, the viewer receives the message and renders it instantly.

Are my songs stored online?

Songs are stored locally in your browser by default. Optional GitHub Gist sync adds backup and sharing if you choose to enable it.

Can I print a songbook from my setlist?

Yes. Switch to print layout to produce a multi-column songbook with sanitized chords and deduplicated choruses for clean printed pages.

Why it’s useful

Running lyrics for a service or performance is a surprisingly demanding job — the operator has to advance slides at the right moment, handle blank screens between songs, and keep the projected text in sync with what the congregation or audience sees. This tool replaces a tangle of presentation software and manual cues with a single, synchronized system that anyone with a browser can run. Worship leaders use it to project hymns and modern songs, tech teams use it to keep a confidence monitor in sync with the main screen, and musicians use the print and songbook layouts to build reusable song collections. Because it works across tabs on the same machine, it needs no special hardware or network setup, and the local storage means your song library is always available even offline.
